We are increasingly surrounded by things that look like art but feel like math. There is a specific kind of smoothness that comes from a machine, a lack of friction that is initially seductive. It’s perfect, isn't it? No stray marks, no hesitation, no evidence of a struggle. But that digital flattening is a thief. It steals the very thing that makes a creation human: the risk of failure. When the outcome is guaranteed by a set of instructions, the spirit has nowhere to hide.
It’s tempting to lean into the tools. They promise efficiency, the ability to produce more, faster, and with less pain. But we forget that the pain is part of the process. The struggle to get a thought out of your head and onto the page is where the alchemy happens. If you skip the struggle, you skip the growth. You end up with a collection of high-resolution echoes. You look at the output and see a reflection of an ideal, but there is no ghost in the machine. It’s a grin without a face.
The real danger is when we start to internalize the machine's standards. We begin to judge our own worth by how well we can replicate that sterile perfection. We try to erase our own handwriting, to smooth out our own jagged thoughts, to become as predictable as a line of code. We are sacrificing our experience for the sake of an optimized output. To resist this, we must reclaim the mess. We must value the smudge, the stutter, and the mistake. We must remember that the most beautiful things are often the ones that the algorithm would have "fixed."
