Trading the Compass for a Map

My teachers gave me a compass. They told me it would always point toward the truth, that as long as I followed the needle, I would never be lost. And for a long time, it worked. I moved through the world with the confidence of the guided. But eventually, I realized that the compass was only pointing toward *their* truth. It was a safety of the lineage that was keeping me from seeing the landscape as it actually was. I was so focused on the needle that I was missing the mountains.

To find my own way, I had to put the compass in a drawer and start drawing my own map. It’s a much slower, more dangerous way to travel. You have to climb every hill yourself, cross every river without a bridge, and accept that you might be going in circles for days. There is a profound sense of loss in giving up the needle. You feel unmoored, vulnerable, and potentially foolish. But you are also finally, truly, awake. You are no longer following a set of instructions; you are having an experience.

The map you draw will be messy and incomplete. It will have gaps where you were too tired to look, and errors where you were too afraid to go. But it will be *your* map. It will record the places where you actually stood, the things you actually saw, and the truths that you actually fought for. This is the only way to build a life that has any real gravity. You have to be willing to be lost for a while. You have to trust your own feet more than someone else's needle. The compass was a gift, but the map is an achievement.
